License Testing

Hi Future Ham,

Welcome to the world of Amateur Radio. It is a fun hobby; you will meet a lot of interesting people and make new friends. It is a good way to communicate with people all over the world as well as people who live locally.  

The New Bern Amateur Radio Club sponsors the exam normally on the 3^rd Saturday of even-numbered months, starting at 9AM.  It is given at the Rhems Fire Department located on Highway 17 South in New Bern, NC. As you face the building, enter from the left side.

As of now, the fee for the exam is $15.00 but, it might go up in the future, so don't be surprised if the fee changes. Bring cash, or make personal checks or money orders out to; ARRL/VEC.

To obtain an Amateur Radio License and Call sign, you must first obtain a Federal Communication Commission (FCC) Registration Number (FRN).

Go to the FCC.GOV Website -

          Select -  FCC Commissions Registration System (CORES)

                  Select -  UPDATED CORES

                           Select -  LOG IN; and provide a username and password.

Follow the instructions to obtain an FRN.

After you have obtained your FRN, search the internet for: NCVEC QUICK-FORM-605-APPLICATION. This will take you to the AMATEUR RADIO RELAY LEAGUE (ARRL) website with the interactive form NCVEC605. Fill out SECTION 1. Be sure to enter your FRN in the appropriate block, print the form, and bring it to the test session.
